”…health of consumers, with few signs of any meaningful change in its policies. In Colombia, workers at Coca-Cola bottling plants have had their safety threatened and even lost their lives for trying to unionize. Eight union organizers have been murdered by Colombian paramilitaries and at least 100 others have been detained and beaten. But Coca-Cola has yet to conduct a full investigation of these claims.”
The US based Stop Killer Coke campaign group cites that since 1989, seven union leaders and one friendly plant manager employed at Coca-Cola bottling operations have been murdered by right wing paramilitary groups in Colombia. Hundreds of other Coke workers and their family members have been tortured, kidnapped and/or illegally detained by violent paramilitaries, often working closely with plant managements. As of July 2005, the situation for Coke workers and their family members remains dangerous.
The Coca-Cola company is reluctant to disclose who their bottling partners are in Columbia and where they are located. All other partners and locations in South and Central America are disclosed.
