Patagonia have a number of impressive biodiversity initiatives. They are creating Patagonia National Park, which is focused on the protection of wildland ecosystems and biodiversity in the Patagonia region of Chile and Argentina; They have an initiative dedicated to establishing migration wildways for animals between protected areas; and initiatives to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, consisting of 1.5 million acres of Coastal Plain.
They are starting to build all their facilities with LEED Certification and have gone above and beyond many of the guidelines and requirements set out by LEED regulations.
Another impressive initiative is the Company’s plans to track the paths, throughout the entire lifecycle, of 10 more products this year.
Patagonia focuses on contributions to environmentally oriented causes. They donate to innovative groups overlooked or rejected by other corporate donors. The Company has donated more than $31 million to roughly 1,000 organizations so far.
They also have a well-received employee benefit that allows employees to volunteer for an environmental group for up to two months while still getting paid.
Patagonia has been involved with Organic Exchange since 2002. They were a founding member of this organization as they were one of the first to convert their entire cotton clothing line to organic in 1996.
Patagonia is targeting Gen Y in its new “Vote the Environment” campaign. The Company is also selling “Vote the Environment” T-shirts, donating $5 from each one to the League of Conservation Voters.
